Oz the Great and Powerful actress, Michelle Williams, is under fire for a recent photo that was used in the magazine, AnOther. Williams ,who portrays Glinda in the film, can be seen dressed as what looks to be a Native American on the cover. In the shot, Williams can be seen wearing a long braided wig ,accentuated by feathers. The British magazine is defending their choice to use the photo and says that they were in no way trying to be insensitive to anyone’s cultural background.
AnOther released a statement saying that although they “recognize the seriousness of this debate, the image in question in no way intends to mimic, trivialize or stereotype any particular ethnic group or culture.” They add, “All the characters in the story were inspired by multiple fashion and cultural references, characters and eras, as well as by our admiration of Ms. Williams as one of the most respected and talented actresses of her generation.”The image is one of eight characters that are seen of the actress in the magazine. AnOther went on to say, “While we dispute the suggestion that the image has a racist subtext in the strongest possible terms, we’re mortified to think that anyone would interpret it that way.”
Michelle Williams is not the only celebrity who has been questioned about their creative choices. Just recently, No Doubt came under fire for their music video, which featured Native American imagery. Also under fire was Victoria Secret, who used Native American imagery in a recent fashion show.
