Rhoda actress and TV legend, Valerie Harper, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with a terminal form of brain cancer called leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. The condition happens when cancer cells spread to the membrane surrounding the brain. The 73 year old actress found out about her diagnosis on January 15,2012 and opened up about it to People magazine.
The doctor’s told Harper that she has about three months left to live. The “Mary Tyler Moore Show” actress just recently penned an autobiography entitled “I, Rhoda”. In the book, Harper talks about her beginnings in the entertainment industry. Harper chronicles her beginnings as a chorus girl all the way to Hollywood and the role that pushed her into stardom, Rhoda.
A non-smoker, Harper had battled and defeated lung cancer in 2009. Harper is not choosing to be sad about her diagnosis, but instead has chosen to keep a positive outlook on life. She tells People, “I don’t think of dying.” “I think of being here now.”
After Rhoda on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, Harper went on to have a successful career with her own series, “Rhoda” and Broadway success with “ Looped” where she played Tallulah Bankhead.
Do not count the actress out just yet. Doctors have been known to be wrong. Harper is opting for chemo to fight the disease. Many fans have taken to twitter to express their love and support for the actress, whom many of us grew up watching. One tweet from, Hoda Kotb read, “I adore you xoxo we all do and are praying for you.”
Andy Cohen tweeted, “Praying for Valerie Harper. Puts everything in perspective quickly.” Sally Jessy Raphael tweeted, “Tragic news about Valerie Harper. She has terminal brain cancer & just 3 months. Sending prayers, love & gratitude for her wonderful work.”
Everyone is wishing Mrs. Harper a speedy recovery.
