An anchor for the CNN network has revealed that she has breast cancer and plans to have surgery done this year to treat her condition. Zoraida Sambolin from CNN’s “Early Start” program, says that she has been struggling with how to tell others about her diagnosis. The 47-year old said that she received strength from reading an op-ed from Angelina Jolie, who described the cancer gene in her family.
“Jolie’s frank op-ed in Tuesday’s New York Times gave Sambolin “strength,” she said.
“She said I feel empowered, that I’m [MAKING]a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity,” Sambolin said on the show Tuesday, according to CNN.com.
“You know, it’s nice to hear somebody else talk about it and have that support of a lot of women around you.”
Jolie said she chose to have the surgery because she carries a gene, BRCA1, which gave her an 87% chance of developing breast cancer.
The “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” star, 37, underwent three months of procedures to have her breasts removed and then surgically reconstructed.
