Late in the month of December a young couple went missing in northern New Jersey. Prosecutors now say the couple has been found dead in a car inside the girlfriend’s detached garage.

There have been no details released concerning the actual cause of death for 24 year old Jorge Rodriguez and his girlfriend, 25 year old Melissa Pereira. Authorities say the couple was found dead at 11:15 am  in Rodriguez’s parked car inside the garage behind the two-story home Pereira shared with her mother.

The Assistant Prosecutor, Michael DeMarco says they are awaiting autopsy results from the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause and manner of death. The couple had made reservations at a bed and breakfast in Pennsylvania where they had planned to spend New Year’s Eve together, however, they never checked in.

Rodriguez and Pereira were last seen on December 27 by someone who reported that they had spotted them driving around town together.

The Star Ledger attempted to contact family members at Pereira’s home and spoke to a man who identified himself as her uncle. He said the family was still in shock and waiting for the medical examiner results.

When the couple failed to check in at their planned destination, they were reported missing. Shortly thereafter, they were placed on the national registry of missing persons.

According to the Patch, Pereira’s cell phone had been intermittently turned on in the last few weeks

Police are not releasing any information concerning what they found at the scene or whether there was any foul play involved. Results of the autopsy will determine whether the couple’s deaths will be treated as a murder, suicide or accidental death.

Prosecutors have told The Star Ledger that there was ‘no reason for public concern.’
