Some people think they can criticize Islam intelligently, but then they just end up sounding silly and closed-minded. One of the pitfalls of American liberals is that they are not open to those who have more conservative views, and treat those ideas as if they are ignorant and antiquated. This has been reflected in consistent attacks on the black church.
Ben Affleck, while promoting his new movie, “Gone Girl,” was on “Real Time with Bill Maher” to discuss a set of political issues. One of those topics was Islam. Affleck became offended when Maher and another guest began to give broad and inflated views on the religion, thinking that they were making thoughtful and accurate statements.
“Hold on — are you the person who officially understands the codified doctrine of Islam?” Affleck asked one of the other guests, Sam Harris.
He then explained to the man that he was making ignorant and racist statements by discussing Islam as “the motherload of bad ideas.” The funny thing is that Bill Maher actually agreed with him, which made the remarks even more insulting.
“It’s gross, it’s racist,” Affleck then said. “It’s like saying, ‘Oh, you shifty Jew.’ ” Maher told Affleck that he wasn’t actually listening to them.
