A man who was making homemade bombs in his garage mistakenly detonated one that blew off his leg.
Michael O’Neil, a 45 year old upstate New York native, is a former Niagara County corrections officer. After the explosion, law enforcement officials not only found O’Neil badly injured, but they also found White supremacist paraphernalia at his home. He is currently in federal custody without bail.
Just two weeks ago, O’Neil was arrested after one of seven bombs he was making accidentally went off. After the latest explosion, O’Neill was rushed to a hospital where his leg had to be amputated. Fortunately he was the only one injured,
“Luckily, he is detained,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney John Alsup. “He is no longer at large in the community with or without some of the physical disabilities he’s going to have going forward, but luckily for the community, he only hurt himself.”
O’Neil’s home was littered with pictures of the KKK, Nazi imagery, and the Confederate flag. Even more surprising is that O’Neil lives in the home with his stepfather, William Ross. Ross chairs the Niagara County Legislature.
According to reports, the explosives O’Neil created contained nails and BB pellets. One was labeled “powder with nails.” Prosecutors believe that despite his injuries, releasing O’Neil would pose a serious threat to the community.
“The fact that there were some items that we described in court as consistent with, white supremacists, to include the Ku Klux Klan, and the Nazi imagery, some of the verbiage which was particularly on the Nazi picture, also the Confederate battle flag, means that law enforcement has more work to go,” U.S. Attorney William Hochul said.
O’Neill will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshalls while he recuperates. After that, he will be transferred to a detention facility.
Neighbors report that O’Neil kept odd hours. “We only know that we see him at night, in the middle of the night, all hours of the night, all seasons, just out in the garage, out in the back yard,” one neighbor said.
